What we need is a method of getting a sites screenshot.
A few examples of sites that do this are http://www.thumbshots.org
and
whois.sc (when you search for a site, it provides a screenshot of it that was premade)
even www.alexa.com does this

Now, we need a system that when we pass it a url (via php?) it goes to the site and collects a screenshot of it and stores it in a specified folder. The screenshot MUST BE VERY COMPRESSED AND SMALL, because we plan to do this for MANY MANY sites.

Your topic subject ("make this program") seems rather demanding. I almost didn't click on the link.

Are you willing to pay good money for this project? It's a big one. The only real way to do it is to write/modify a browser to output to a file instead of the screen. Since many sites use flash and other pluggins, it'll make the project rather difficult. If an OSS browser like Mozilla allows for the rendered page to be outputed to stdout, you'll be in huge luck. But other then that, it'll be a huge project.

I suspect other companies either invested a lot of money into their software, or hired people to do it manually.
