The folks at Inktomi, (the technology that fuels many search engines),
have been crawling the Web over the past 4 months using a 100 MB/sec
ethernet connection to build a WebMap database. The study determined
that there are now more than 1 billion unique Web pages tucked away on
6.4 million different servers. They also posted some other interesting
factoids, including the type of server that's dominating the field, the
most common page name (aside from "index" or "default"), and the longest
(most ridiculous) domain name. More at the Inktomi WebMap.
