changing a variable in a url

I need to know if there is a way to pull the previous url (from history) change the variable sessionID and then push that same url to the browser window with the new sessionID. I'm trying to eliminate (at least from surfers point of view) a login glitch so they are sent to the same page they logged in from...any ideas?
