document.writeln() problem in Netscape!!

I am trying to open a new window in Javascript (in Netscape Communicator 4.61) and write a simple string to it. This is the code:

function display(){
alert("display()");
window2=window.open('','window2');
window2.document.write("hello");
}

Netscape displays the dialog box fine (due to 'alert'), it opens the new window, but the text does not appear!! The function display() is being called as an action listener of a button on the page.

This works just fine in IE. I need to be able to implement this for Netscape as well! Is there a special setting in Netscape other than javascript being turned on?
