Form Field Validation

I am interested in hearing about methods for form field validation. I would prefer client side methods because it reduces the load of the server.

I also am trying to figure out how I can do things such as print the format for the user in the cell that they are going to enter data. For example the following is a form field that the user enters a phone number.
