how to close popup window?

how to close window if i don't know its name?
free web site's popup for exapmle?

window.close("<URL_of_the_AD>")
does not work.
and the URL of the advertisement is the only thing i can see.

I'm absolutely certain, but...

I think it would be something like:

windowName.close()

In order to access it, you would have needed to open the window with a global varible in the page where you're closing the window.
