Can't send email with a From address that has special characters

I'm using CDO to send email in ASP, and I can't seem to send a message to a working address in which the from address contains a special character.

For example,

john@net.com would work, but
jöhn@net.com would NOT work.

Here is the error message:
Unable to deliver this message because the follow error was encountered: "Error is processing file in pickup directory.".

The specific error code was 0xC00402CE.

Any reason for this?

Google is an Administrators best friend...

I Googled your error code and came up with around 1,280 topics. As a network administrator, I regularly Google any odd or never-seen-before system errors.

I've tried Google. Most of the answers lead to "Use CDO, not CDONTS". I'm already running CDO, I'm beginning to think that this may be a short-sighted limitation to CDO.

Is the special character a US-ASCII character? At this time that's pretty much the only encoding allowed in email envelope and headers. Perhaps the message ending up in the badmail folder is exactly what should happen.
