Cannot start IIS

i came into work the morning (being the last person on that machine on friday and the first person on monday) and for some reason i can't seem to start iis again.

each time i try to, i get the following error:

Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred.

i did some googling and all the articles i can find tell me that something else is using port 80 on our machine. i ran this command in command prompt:

netstat -ano

and found that nothing else was using port 80.

is there another reason why this is happening? does it need any other ports? i haven't installed anything on that machine in the past week so i cant see what is being done differently.

thanks.
goran

Have you run a complete virus scan?

Also look in the windows event log for any clues, and take a look at the IIS logs for the weekend for any suspicious activity.

well i found out what it is, but only after reinstalling the server and getting the same error 3 days later.

the problem turned out to be the virus scanner itself. i had avg installed and for some reason the installation would become corrupt and have to be uninstalled in order to get iis / ftp working again.
