Help Setting up IIS
I am having a hard time setting up my IIS.
I went to the Contol panel > Administrative Tools > Internet information Services (IIS6) Manager Then the window titled 'Internet information Services (IIS6) Manager' appeared On the left hand side of the window I can see: Internet Information Services But it did not have my <pc name>(Local Computer) listed below it. Double clicking on the icon in this left panel does nothing. Right clicking on it brings up a menu with the options: Connect... View > New Window From Here Export List Help I clicked on Connect... and I entered my computer's name in the window where it asked me for a computer name. When I clicked on OK it came back with a message that says: "This computer is not running Internet nformation Services version 4 or higher. " |

have you checked to make sure that IIS is started?
Also, since you are trying to use IIS6, I assume this is a Windows Server 2003 Box... if not, you need to use the IIS5 Manager...

I have Windows XP Home addition. It is the OS that came with this computer.
So I have two questions. (#1) I understand that there is no IIS with this OS. Is that right? (#2) Where do I go to buy XP Pro? Can you just pick one up at Circuit City? |

Yes, and yes. Or maybe (I don't know about circuit city but you can get XP Pro at Best Buy and most stores that sell software).

If you decide to try to install IIS on XP Home you'll be pretty much on your own if you have any problems. There are kludges like the one juniperr posted, but there are other windows features not present in XP Home that can cause other difficult-to-solve problems with asp pages & databases.

Dont get me wrong with my post here DougG I tottaly agree not to do this on a production box and have ripped people for it in the past, but for a home based web server to get your hands wet or just curiosity or informational I posted that article and only because microsoft themselves had it posted. also be aware that home edition only supports 5 user connections and professional is 10. Now if you want a production web server you would get 2003 server web edition that has unlimited connections connot be a domain controller and is about the same price as XP pro.

Yep, this is a better option if you're going to buy anything! I try to discourage IIS on XP home, mostly because of making numerous answers to questions with stuff like "navigate to the folder in Explorer, click the security tab ..." only to have the OP come back with "I can't find the security tab", to which I say "make sure simple filesharing is disabled" only to have the OP come back with "I can't find that setting", finally getting around to "Oops - you have XP Home. Nevermind!" Which is all a big waste of time. ![]() |
