I need help being seen
I am running XP and have recently installed IIS 5.1. I am familiar with ASP, SQL, and interdev as I have used them in my work enviroment. I am trying to get a little bit of practice at home and get something out on the internet to show my abilities. I have setup the directory through IIS and got it to interact through SQL through URL. The problem resides when I try and access this outside of my local box. When I right click on the directory under websharing it says that it is shared.
I have a Linksys BEFSR41 V3 Router and have tried just about everything with no luck. I port forwarded 80 and 81 to my computer and that did nothing. I tried turning on DMZ mode and that did nothing as well. I dont know if that means the files arent propertly shared through IIS or if there is something wrong with my settings with my router. I really dont know too much about networking. I have spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out what I need to do in order to get access to the outside world. I have searched message boards and have came up with nothing that helps. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks |

Do you have any software firewall that may be interfering? Typically you can forward port 80 through your linksys and get to your server using your outside IP address.

Actually I am running BlackIce which I did not mention. I know that this will close all open ports I have and is a little reduntant with a router, but to these tests I have turned Black Ice completely off. When I left Black Ice running I could see the http request come in and I even went as far as setting the IP that was coming in to trust and allow. It was my computer from work that I was using to test. Still nothing. Even with Black Ice turned off is there a chance that it still could be blocking access?
Thanks! |

You don't by chance have the XP firewall running unnoticed do you? I've had a couple customers with the XP firewall on and they didn't even know it.

Make sure you can access your web by IP address internally from the web server box, both using your internal lan address and your external internet address.
