IIS 5.1 Multiple Domain Names?
Hey, i have a windows XP Pro with IIS 5.1 and i want to host more then one domain name off of it. and had a couple of questions.
1) Is it even possible or am i just running around blindly, 2) since I am running around blindly, i found this website, which i thought was it, and i followed the steps in it, but for some reason, when i get down to adding a 2nd website, it wont let me, like it the option is not there at all. (Site: http://www.devhood.com/tutorials/tutorial_details.aspx?tutorial_id=438) Just some quick BG Info. I have a windows XP pro computer, and IIS is running fine on it. so thats not the problem (atleast i think not) also i have 1 Static IP Address so maybe thats the reason. Any ideas, like i said, am i running around blindly, or can i actaully doit ony me system. any help is appreated. Thanks in advance. MP |

Yes, it's possible. Try Googling for configuring custom host headers, or here's the link:

actaully it turns out i was running around blindly, but thanks PWD, the google link you gave comfirmed that. another forum, plus a couple of tutorial site state that XP pro can only allow 10 connections at once (knew that already) but also it allows you to only have one domain name, no more ![]() so thanks for your help PWD anyway, but looks like it is a lost course on this sitiuation. Oh well looks like aim going to need to go out and buy Windows 2003, or go with aparche, but without asp its, useless. so windows 2003 it is. Thanks anyway. OH if aim wrong in reading or somthing, and you know how to actaully doit, then please do share. |

You can use host headers to handle multiple domains with XP, but you can't create multiple independent web sites on different IP's like you can with a server-based IIS.
But there is that 10 connection limit, so if you are planning any amount of traffic to your server XP Pro isn't a good choice. EDIT: I may be wrong on the host header thing, make sure you verify that IIS 5.1 does in fact support multiple domain names by host headers. I haven't used host headers on XP myself, and further googling has turned up people stating that xp pro doesn't support host headers.

Sorry, I misread your post...I thought you had stated you were running IIS 5.0. You are correct with 5.1..only one domain name.
I recently made the switch to Win2k Server and am running 5.0 where you can configure host headers to run multiple domain names. I'll be a little more careful next time I respond to a post... |
