IIS 5.1 "unknown username or bad password"
I just joined this forum. I've searched this forum, the MS KB, and the net in general to find an answer to the problem I'm having. Thus this post.
I've developed several websites over the last several years, generally using ASP. I do the development locally and then upload the final version. Just today, when I tested one of my local sites, I could not get the ASP page to display. I'm running XP Pro with IIS 5.1. I have the beta version of SP2 installed. I've accessed my local sites since this installation, so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. With one of my local sites (all of which are subwebs under my default web), I can get to index.asp, but the images don't display. With 2 of the other sites, when I try to access index.asp, the title of the page appears in the title bar of IE6, but the page never displays--just a cursor with hourglass. The event veiwer tells me the error ID is 100 and involves W3SVC. The MS link just tells me there is no further information about this error. I'm also told I have an unknown username or bad password. However, I have changed neither one of these lately. The only software I'm aware of installing since the last time I knew the sites worked locally is UltraEdit and TextPad trial versions. I saw some threads here and in the MS KB that made me think I should reset the IWAM and IUSR passwords, but I'm leary of doing this because of the warning messages saying those users could lose information. I think this all had to do with some information getting out of sync. How would things get out of sync and is there anyway to tell which one is the culprit? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Bruce |

I'd try creating a new virtual directory and copying the non-working site files there & see if your site works in a new home. Perhaps something got out of whack in the metabase for that site. I don't have a link but there is a MS article that describes all the permission settings for a successful IIS installation, try a google search.

Problem solved!!
It turns out that I'm just an idiot! When I turned off Zone Alarm, my sites worked just fine. Doh! Thanks for looking! Bruce |
