What OS do you have? IIS 6 comes with windows 2003, if you have 2003 you should have iis6. Otherwise iis5/Apache would be good bets. IIS6 is more stable the IIS5.x it has more security built in, but part of that security comes from the OS itself. Displeaser

OK but...

I have XP pro. so you seem to be saying only IIS5. In fact when I had some s/w loaded as a client of W200x (a school site) they loaded IIS6 onto my machine. That is why I was asking if it was a better one. Thanks, I'll assume it is not available to me now. |

IIS 5.0 is Windows 2000
IIS 5.1 is Windows XP (which oddly enough has less functionality than 5.0) IIS 6.0 is Windows 2003 Unfortunately, there's no way around it. |

Not really, bit IIS5 is available on both W2000 Servers, where you can have multiple websites, unlimited connections, etc, and W2000 Pro, where the same limitations as XP exist, 10 connections, single website only, etc. There is no server OS version of IIS 5.1 |

URLs
OK I cannot have IIS6 (but when I looked at it's properties that's what it said!).
What are the various addressing forms to gain access to a website hosted on my local machine by IIS5?: \\machinename\webrootfolder/? \\machinename\webrootfolder\? \\machinename\webrootfolder/index.shtml? \\machinename\webrootfolder\index.shtml? http://localhost/webrootfolder/index.shtml? 127.x.x.x/index.html? I am trying to setup access with a program and some of these work sometimes. Help appreciated. |

On your computer open a web browser to http://localhost/iishelp and the IIS documentation should pop up. I'd stay away from using the ms computername in the url, although it usually works. Use a dns name or ip address is better.
