IIS hanging on XP with SP2
Hi All,
I'm having trouble getting IIS to work on my XP machine with SP2. I started with a clean install of XP and added SP2. I have McAfee Virus Scan, Firewall, and Privacy Service all running. I installed IIS and the IIS lockdown tool. When I attempt to access http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 the browser just hangs until it eventually times out. No log entry is created in the IIS logs. If I stop the webserver, an error message immediately comes back in the browser so I think browser-IIS connection atleast knows something is there, it's just not actually completing the request. I'm just trying to access a simple "hello" html page - no asp or anything. I have port 80 opened in the firewall. I've tried accessing localhost with all of the Mcafee products disabled (firewall, privacy, and virus scan) - and get the same results - no luck. I've uninstalled the urlscan that comes with IIS lockdown and have even "undone" the lockdown - still no luck. I've uninstalled and reinstalled IIS as well. Any suggestions? I don't think it's a firewall issue because if I specifically block IIS in Mcafee it won't even allow me to start the webserver. Disabling all the mcafee products doesn't change the results either. It appears something very odd is happening with IIS. Any help would be appreciated thanks! |

Try turning McAfee off and see whether this helps. I also posted a link to troubleshooting SP2 settings in another post which you can search for.

Thanks for the quick reply - I have tried turning off all the mcafee programs and it doesn't make any difference.
I didn't see a link to your previous post, could you re-post it? |

In http://forums.devshed.com/showthread.php?t=217264 there is a link to troubleshooting SP2 settings.
Incidentally try turning off the SP2 firewall as well and see if this also helps. |

I don't know about McAfee but with Norton just turning off the AV check doesn't stop the script blocking service. You either go to the Services mmc and stop the script blocking service, or disable it in the Norton options and then reboot.
Your description sounds like a script blocking problem.

I found the solution in case anyone has a similar problem.
I uninstalled McAfee Privacy Service and everything works. Apparently, just disabling it wasn't enough. |
