IIS Indexing Service Questions

Where does the indexing service retrieve the document title from? Is it in the properties of the file or elsewhere?

I just recently started at a new job, and am trying to edit the search function so that it will display a document title instead of the filename. I see in the properties of the index that there is a DocTitle value and when querying the catalog, I see that the title shows up for some of the files, but not all.

Upon further investigation, I went to the files with titles and looked at their properties to see if they displayed any title, but there was none.

Any insight into this would be a great help!

I dont' use indexing service, but somewhere in http://msdn.microsoft.com/library you'll find all the indexing service documentation.
