IIS SMTP queue
Hi All
I run an IIS smtp server behind our firewall that relays all mail to a backend Exchange server (5.5) Incoming only. It all works well but the IIS smtp takes it's time to send the mail over to my Exchange box. (about 45 mins) I have checked DNS and the IIS seems to configured properly. I have searched in vain to find the registry key or whatever to see if I can speed it up, anyone got any ideas? what determines when the smtp server relays the mail? I have the IIS toolkit but the settings are somewhat cryptic. Cheers in advance if you can help. Richard |

Are you finding that this is only with certain Mail Exchange servers (I.E. AOL etc)? Or are they all being queued.
I know the handshaking process may take a while if the recieving MX server is setup security wise in a some way.

Are you set up using the IIS SMTP smarthost?
Unless your IIS smtp server is extremely loaded, I'd look for the culprit to be in the exchange server side.

Im having a similar problem so I thought instead of creating a new thread thought I would jump in here..
My CDO message is being created and sent to the queue, but doesn't move from there. My understanding of the clients set up is they have IIS running on one box and Exchange on another machine.. My understanding of IIS SMTP is that it doesn't need exhange to send mail to the internal domain. I have set up the permissions to relay mail only from Localhost.. With this set up, should SMTP forward to the Exchange for internal delivery? |

Did you try setting your exchange server as a smarthost then letting it do all the delivery work?
Also look in your badmail folders perhaps there are clues there. |

thanks for your reply, I have requested the files written to badmail, and will take a look. Strange thing and Im not sure about it, is the form will send info out to @hotmail.com though will not send to the same domain. IE: the server is www.servername.com.au it will not forward mail to user@servername.com.au |

It sounds to me like some kind of spam filter or relay restriction in the email server configuration. Often there are problems sending email from webserver code using IIS SMTP just because the other things that affect email are often not set up on the webserver, such as reversedns, proper mx dns entries, etc.

Its all sorted now, the techs said something about traffic being blocked on port 25.
