IIS6 + adding new perms to folders...
new to XP and w2k3, and sometimes when setting perms for ASP, i have to type in my anon user name under the Folder > Security dialog box on my workstation to enable my software to "server" the content back to me for editing.
it USED to be enuff to use Everyone under w2k, but now I must use IUSR_wholelottalettersandnumbers... yet my machine name is simply JIM? tried adding simply IUSR_JIM and it would NOT accept same... is there a way to change that string of numbers/letters to something MUCH easier to remember when I ADD that user to a folder etc.??? like say IUSR_Jim ? You could try renaming the account in your server administrative tools, but if you do rename the IIS anonymous account you'll need to re-associate the renamed account with IIS.

Duh?
sorry, but I didn't follow you...do you mean in mmc, call up the Computer Management, open up Users under Local users/groups?
there, yes I do see the IUSR_wholebunchaletters account for the Internet Guest Account, as well as IUSR_samebunchaletters for a "launch IIS Process Account too. So I looked at the properties for the IUSR_machinename account and nowhere in the box is there a place to change that name...not in either of those accounts... ? what do I do? Jim |

You mean if you right-click on the username in computer management, rename isn't one of the options?
I'm guessing you renamed your computer after you installed IIS ![]() |

actually no, what happened was that i got hit in a drive by virus from an URL, and thenhad to reinstall the whole OS....
the name however for the computer was NOT changed... my machine name is JIM-MDG trying to enter IUSR_JIM-MDG does not work as I said, the correct IUSR name is like this DRT5692877RK8 this "name" is nothing that I entered, nothing that I created etc... so....now what? and yes, rename is an option. tried it 3 times. doesn't work IE will NOT change the IUSR name that must be entered.... I don't know, maybe there is some vestige of your virus on the computer. If you did a complete reinstallation you would have had to rename the computer during the installation process.
IIS doesn't arbitrarily create IUSR_ user accounts, it will use the computer name when IIS is installed. If your IUSR_ account is not the computer name, then either someone changed the IUSR_ account name or changed the computer's name. You must be a local administrator user to make any of these changes. |
