Others cannot see my web site

Hello,

I have a Netgear router that is connected with 2 computers. One of this computer I like to have my web site hosted on. I am connected through a cable modem. I have done everything correctly but people still cannot access to my site. Here are the followings that I have went through.

1. Installed Windows XP Pro and IIS 5.1 that came with Windows XP
2. Setup my Netgear router with manual IP Address (router being 192.168.0.1) and port forwarding to 192.168.0.2 (this is my web computer)
4. I am using DirectUpdate software with zoneedit.com as my Dynamic DNS

Everything seems to be done correctly. The problems are:
1. I can only access my site by typing http://localhost. I cannot see my web site by typing in http://www.mysite.com. The error came back as:

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

2. When I go to another computer that is not on my network. I can ping the site .. but the same error (from above) came back when I typed in http://www.mysite.com

3. By the way .. does anyone know of anysite that allows us to type in a URL and it test the site for us .. right now, I have to keep asking a friend to test my site out.

thank you very much,

Can you open your web using the current IP address for your computer instead of the name? If IP address works something is probably wrong with your dynamic dns setup.

If you still can't access your web via IP address, review your port 80 forwarding, firewall on your XP box, etc. for something blocking traffic.

Hi, Thanks for your help ..

I have now removed my router and connected my computer (with the web site on) directly to my cable modem, and it still does not work.

The configuration now is:
1. My LAN is set to get IP Address from my ISP
2. I am running DirectUpdate and zoneedit.com for my Dynamic DNS. (I can check that zoneedit.com does change the IP as I restart my system). Can you or anyone suggest a good DDNS service that is reliable.
3. I can now access http://www.mysite.com and http://localhost from my system but no one else outside of my system can access my site.
4. Can you (or anyone) think of an issue with IIS5/Windows XP Pro security that we have to set up.

thanks so much again ..

Thanks Doug,

I have tried enter "http://24.43.168.152/"
but that waits a while than came back with same message

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

Could it possibly be that my ISP is blocking request to port 80?

That is certainly a possibility. You could reconfigure your IIS to a different port for testing purposes.

Since access via IP doesn't work either, probably zoneedit and dynamic dns aren't the culprit.

If you enabled the XP built-in firewall maybe it's blocking HTTP in.

wow ... thanks so much,

I think disabling XP's firewall is the answer.

thanks again Doug,
