Renewing SSL cert - “Selected certificate was already installed on another server”

Hi folks,

I'm having an issue installing a couple of certificates in IIS6 for a customers websites.

The sites already had certificates, I am renewing them. Same CA.
I generated the CSR's and sent them on to the customer.
They sent them on to Thawte to be signed.
The customer sent me on the signed certificates.
When I tried to install them in IIS I got the message “Selected certificate was already installed on another server”

I looked at the content of the old and new certs and they seem to be identical which is probably why I get the message above.
The content of the old and new CSR’s is different though.

I think the old CSR’s were signed again. Either the old ones were sent to Thawte by the customer or Thawte signed the old ones again which they may have had stored somewhere.

Is it possible for the old and new CSR to generate the same cert? I wouldn't have thought so...

Cheers.

I don't know, but I don't think this is an IIS issue.

I thought this would be the right forum? I'm trying to install a certificate in IIS.

I can view the new certificates in MMC -> Certificates(Local Computer) -> Certificate Enrollment Requests -> Certificates

Should I remove the current certificates from MMC -> Certificates(Local Computer) -> Personal -> Certificates and then try to install the new certs?

Cheers.

You could try moving (I wouldn't delete the old certs just yet) the old certs to a backup folder and import the new ones. Just make sure in IIS your site is pointing to the correct cert to use.

The current SSL cert was sent to me to install instead of the new cert.

Got the new certs and installed without issue.

Cheers.
