Resolve website root based on url from wildcard DNS
I hope the title of this post wasn't too confusing. I am working on a problem and after a few hours of searching for a solution I finally decided to request everyone assistance.
I currently have wildcard dns setup on my server (win2k live server w/ a win2003 dev server). Wild card dns allows web surfers to enter a URL like URL where anything is anything they type and mysite is the domain of my site. I am attempting to have a dynamic hosting solution where a web surfer can type anything.mysite.com and based on what is typed for anything a specific root directory with the same name (anything) is opened. I know how to grab the url and redirect to a directory like anythign.mysite.com/anything however what I want to do is have anything.mysite.com's root directory change dynamically to /anything. This may prove impossible however tripod.com has implemented what appears to be a similar solution. For example I can type URL and it goes to a custom 404 now if I enter URL it goes to a site with a specific root directory. Similar if I type URL it goes to a site with a specific root directory. I hope that is an adequate explanation, any help would be appreciated. Also any other solution that would produce similar results would be helpful. Thanks AD |

I too am interested in knowing a solution to this.
wasarrested.com, blogspot.com, and youaremyfriend.com do similar things. Ideas, anyone? -- Jacob |
