Starting the Default SMTP Virtual Server

Hello All,

I just finish adding the SMTP Service to my IIS 5.0. The problem I'm having is that I cannot start the "Default SMTP virtual Server": Since I'm logged in remotely could that be the problem? Does anyone know what I need to do? Please advise. Thanks.

Thanks for the response edwinbrains, the error message I was getting is "The service did not response to the starter control request in a timely fashion. Check the windows Event viewer for details"..I checked the Windows Event viewer and there's nothing related to the problem at hand. I was at the actual server and still I was not able to start that service. Please advise. Thanks.

No, I only have one to my knowledge. We installed IIS several months ago and decided to add the SMTP Server component. So I'm not sure if I added that Component correctly. Could please give me step by step instructions on configuring the SMTP server? I'm using Windows 2000 Server. Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid I don't really have much experience configuring the SMTP server. Whenever I've used it, the basic installation has been fine, except I've setup a smart host where the email is sent. I either end up using Exchange or Postfix now.

Do you have any firewall software on the server? Does IIS (webserver) start?

Otherwise, you need to review all the settings you made in the SMTP MMC properties. I have never had a problem with SMTP on 3 or 4 versions of windows with no changes to the default installation settings.
