Signal search

Hi, I'm new to IPhone SDK. I'm interested in a way of making the signal search less aggressive when there's no signal available, to save battery life.

It is possible to do it using an App?

If not, can I alternatively turn on Airplane Mode on or completely disable signal search some other way?
