    convert .java to .class

i'm on a shared host. that uses freebsd 5.1

    if i create a file called hey.java

    and do

    prompt> javac hey.java

    i get
ELF binary type "0" not known.
/usr/local/bin/javac: Exec format error. Binary file not executable.

    how could i fix it?

    thank you =)

    wannabe,

I think you need to speak to the sysadmin of the server you are using. The javac binary you are running is not executable on your BSD system, which suggests to me that they downloaded the wrong binary install kit.

you could try testing this by downloading the j2sdk yourself and installing it in your home area, and repointing javac to your own personal installation - although I don't know how successful that'd be.

Not very successful because afaik even native freebsd jdk port still based on linux core which means it needs linux emu running, which is most likely the cause of this problem. Not to say that last time I checked jdk and co took several hours almost half gig to install from scratch and I'm pretty sure you won't be able to do it from user's account anyway.
And you know I mean that.
