good java development environment?
Looking for recommendations for a good development environment for java...

I'm working on WinXP pro. Would love something w/ some drag'n'drop functionality, but text-based w/ intelligent code highlighting is really all I 'need'.

Also, if there's anything that is 'free' that'd be great !

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

netbeans rocks my socks (and it's free)

also some good UML software that integrates with it is Posiedon For UML

http://www.gentleware.com (the community edition is free)

Also, if you're doing open-source or personal development (no commercial stuff), you can get Borland's JBuilder Personal Edition. It will set you back $9.95 but its a very popular IDE.

Just one more quick note: The NetBeans project is sponsored by Sun and favors their technology. The Eclipse project is sponsored by IBM and several other vendors. Depending on whether you favor one group's technology over the other might make a difference on which one you pick.

Another free product is Sun ONE Studio Community Edition (formerly Forte' I believe). Since this is also released by Sun, it may be very similar to NetBeans. I've not used it so I don't know.

Sun ONE studio is the same codebase as NetBeans but (this may be a personal thing) NetBeans seems more finished/polished than ONE. both integrate with Posiedon

I think Sun ONE (the for pay version) has better J2EE functionality than netbeans.

If you're doing J2EE, and you've got money to burn, IBM's Websphere Application Studio probably has the most features. It's also the only IDE I've seen with a WYSIWYG editor that works with jsps (dynamic content in the editor). I think you get unlimited liscenses if you buy Websphere Server (~$12,000 USD per CPU), but that might just be the deal my company got.

i use JBuilder but my school has a contract with them so we get JBuilder Enterprise free and its awesome.

Personal is good but i dont think u can use it for JSP and servlets really. I could be wrong with JBuilder 8 ive used personal 5.

You can dl personal for free if you have a broadband connection
