Question

I have downloaded tomcat and am trying to install it. Instructions in the user guide say this,

" Unzip the file into some directory (say foo). This should create a new subdirectory named "tomcat".
Change directory to "tomcat" and set a new environment variable (TOMCAT_HOME) to point to the root directory of your Tomcat hierarchy.
On Win32 you should type:
"set TOMCAT_HOME=foo\tomcat" "

but where do i need to set this variable?

Plus when i run startup.bat it tells me to point JAVA_HOME to my JDK. I know that i have installed the microsoft java machine but don't know what or where this JDK file is.

Im running windows 98 if this is of any use.

Any help would be much appreciated,
Ben.

TOMCAT setup

I think you need to download the JDK from Sun's site. The MS Virtual machine is only a run-time engine and will not compile java files into class files.

Your "environment variables" for JAVA_HOME & TOMCAT_HOME need to be set in your autoexec.bat file which should be located in at C:\

I installed Tomcat last week on a Win2000 machine and it took bit to get it configured but seems to run smoothly now.

NOTE: I think Sun refers to the v1.3 of the JDK as the "Java2 SDK" on thier site.
