when i was a ta in college...this is the book we used:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...818151-7377632

i think that it is a pretty good book to learn with. covers a broad range of topics. it starts out as somewhat of a introduction, but there is enough info. to where you can skip around. the jdbc and socket programming chapters are pretty good. as with any programming book, just do the examples for the best way to learn the language.

I used the same book. It definately focuses on java for client apps, rather than jsp/servlets/etc., but it does cover those topics as well. It worked for me, and it's the best java book I've seen since.
