JSP HELP - Disable Text box

Hi all,
Iam trying to make a Input text box disabled when the user
clicks on a button using javascript
.
form.fieldname.disabled=true;

Once the field is disabled I cannot access the value from that field.
but still my application needs to access the value from that text box to pass it back to a servlet.

Can someone suggest a way to do that.
