mod_jk erro - ELF not big endian ?

Hi all,
I've got apache / tomcat / php / mysql working in linux and now want mod_jk to glue tomcat to apache.

I've got the mod file from jakarta.apache and followed all the instructions carefully. apache is configured with mod_so.

I've put the line -
Include /usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3/conf/mod_jk.conf-auto
in my httpd.conf file and edited the server.xml file so tomcat generates the above file ... no problems.
I start tomcat, then try to start apache and get the following error -
Cannot load /usr/local/apache/libexec/mod_jk.so into server: /usr/local/apache/libexec/mod_jk.so: ELF file data encoding not big-endian

mod_jk is in the right place, I didn't do anything to it after downloading it from the server .. any ideas what i've done wrong?

many thanks.
