my session variables get lost!!

Hi guys!! I am using session variables on a portal application
(In an Apache server, JDK 1.2, Oracle Portal) , sometimes the session keeps the value of the variables, sometimes it doesn't... why does it happen?? Should I adjust some configuration of the session object, or there would be another cause for this problem?
