    Online Java Exercises

I'm looking for something online or in a book with good exercises for beginners learning Java.

My company has a contract with an online training company and their "tutorials" are good for vocabulary, but I'd rather be given a small project and told a few key things that need to be done to complete it and then do it on my own.

    Here's one that I found:
    http://issc.rau.ac.za/appliedmaths/exjava.html

I was hoping that people here might know of a few others or if you could recommend any books or other literature.

This is my first experience with OOP (ASP Developer) and some of the concepts are hard to understand when you just read about them.

    Thanks all,

Sun has some excellent tutorials (often called trails by them) from beginning stuff all the way to advanced. You can go to java.sun.com or look on google for java tutorials

I've been searching Google all morning. Most of what I'm finding is just basic tutorials.

What I'm looking for more specifically are practice tests or the like.

    For example:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Write a Java application using two for loops to produce the following pattern of asterisks.

    *
    **
    ***
    ****
    *****
    ******
    *******
    ********

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

This will allow me to "test" my curent knowledge and force me to use techniques that I've only currently read about and looked at.

I need something more hands on. I learn better by doing than I do by strictly reading.

    Thanks for the link though.
