Widening the scope of this Forum - opinions?

    Hey all,

I am just thinking that this forum should be extended to include Java applications/applets development - in addition to the current JSP& servlet stuff. All this would require is the addition of a comma after the word 'Java' in 'Java Servlets & JSP'.

I personally feel that Java's most common use is in the development of applets and applications. As it happens, I am currently writing a large internet-based application in Java. However, because it doesn't use Java-based server-side technologies, I have to take my discussions of AWT, Swing etc elsewhere.

So do you think this forum should be opened up to broaden the topics covered?

Absolutely. I think it is very common to use applets for one half of your web app, so at the very least that would be reason enough to talk about tech other than strictly jsp/servlets.

Well, for me java is mainly a server side language and would really like to see J2EE articles here on Devshed, jsp and servlets are just a little part of the whole java thing.
So, I'd like to see this extension, but not only about swing and applets!

BTW: why don't they put up more articles about java?? From what I see it's much more important (in the industry) than php, python and maybe even perl. I agree not to focus on closed source topics like ASP, VB, Oracle or so, but java, even if not opensource, plays a big role in the opensource world.

It's not a bad idea, but maybe a sub-forum for it?

Many of the queries we get here aren't Servlet/JSP specific anyway and can crop up in any Java program (Exceptions, JDBC etc.). I don't see any harm in opening the forum up to general Java conversation.

Ishnid is right. There are allready lots of non-jsp questions about java here. Some structure in this could be a good thing.

I also agree that there are lots of general java threads in this forum, which is why I think it would make more sense to open it up and clearly indicate that this is a general forum for java discussion - Hopefully it would also increase the post-rate in this forum too. It would be great to see an increase of activity and a growth in Devshed's Java developers' community.

Not sure what the policy is on posting other programming forums is but this is a GREAT site/forum for java. You may be able to get some ideas for this site from it...
