    Persistent Problems Installing Java

I've been trying to install Java onto my machine (Windows XP SP3), and I get an error message (of the error report variety) saying that Windows Installer (msiexec.exe) has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Now the impression I'm getting is that a person would just click on "more details", and it would point to a specific .dll or whichever it was, and they'd get its name, go on the internet and find a replacement. (I've already tried replacing msiexec.exe itself)

In this case, the "failing module" is MSI2D4.tmp. However, this file name is unique to this crash- the last several attempts have all yielded different combinations of letters and numbers for that name, despite there being no difference in my installation attempts.

After that happens, the Oracle installer tells me that Java has been installed properly, and opens a Firefox window to take me to the website for verification, which naturally fails.

    I'm at a loss.

This is a guess and it has been years since I have used WinXP, but could it be a permissions issue? Have you tried running the installer as an administrator? If that's not it, we can try some other things.

MSI2D4.tmp sounds like possibly a file created during download. Have you tried deleting what you downloaded and download the whole thing again?

Yep, I've downloaded the offline installer a few times and used the online one, which re-downloads the installation software each time.
