Passing Vars from Javascript to PHP and Back?

Is there a way to do this? I'm creating a data modification screen for my database and I want to dynamically change some of the data based on changesto the other fields, but I cannot get the two to work together. I can do a pure Javascript function, but not pass the vars to PHP, or visa-versa. Any hints/tips/pointers/pointers to articles?
