Question Simulate expandable comment-boxes similar to Facebook

Hi, I'm fairly new to Javascript(did some HTML a few years ago). I'm not even 100% sure if JS is what I need. I'm building a webpage that's similar to Twitter(Note that I do not plan to actually connect to real Twitter accounts; I'd be creating the business logic too).

Once a user tweets, his tweet would appear on all his followers' main page, which would get the list of tweets from a servlet. (I'm still learning Servlets too, so please let me know if my idea is absurd)
Further, every follower would be able to post comments(presumably an unlimited number). So how would I go about designing such an 'expandable' comments panel just like those found on say, Twitter or Facebook?
Although I'm willing to put effort into this, I'm seriously low on time. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

One way would be an auto updating iframe, using a JavaScript setTimeout or setInterval (or jQuery coefficient) or use AJAX to auto update a HTML element (ie "div") and update it on a time based criteria, as well.
