I need a page that can read/write to a text file on the server WITHOUT using any server side processing. Is either one of these operations (reading or writing in auxillary file) possible using client side languages?

(I see the obvious solution of installing a server side language but this has to be on a school's server and if any of you have worked with a school before they are resistant to change and new ideas, it simply would not work or i would graduate before it went through the board)

Reading from and writing to a text file is server side processing. So the answer would be no, as in previous answers.

Has your school server definitely not got any scripting facility installed? Most web servers will have something - CGI, ASP, PHP. Worth a check anyway.

I think you should check out Perl as almost every web server supports that now these days...
