    Angry xhtml and Netscape6's javascript conflict?

    Hi,

    I'm trying to upgrade my husband's site to xhtml, and I'm having problems with the free counter (his security blanket):

    <!-- WEBBOT bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan ALT="Site Meter" -->
    <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">
    <!--
    var site="myidhere";
    //-->
    </script>
    <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript1.2" src="http://sm5.sitemeter.com/js/counter.js?site=myidhere">
    </script>
    <noscript>
    <a href="http://sm5.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=myidhere" target="_top">
    <img src="http://sm5.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=myidhere" alt="Site Meter" border="0" /></a>
    </noscript>
    <!-- Copyright (c)2002 Site Meter -->
    <!-- WEBBOT bot="HTMLMarkup" Endspan -->

    It works well in the old, regular (no DTD) HTML, and as XHTML in IE. I'm having problems with Netscape 6 (Mac and PC), though. I have a table, and columns and rows disappear!!!

    It seems to have something to do with the statement
    var site="myidhere". When I take it out, it works in Netscape (but no longer in IE since it needs the value in the variable). It even works in Netscape if I just change a letter in the name of the variable (ie to sited instead of site). Since it's not my script (it calls it from sitemeter.com), I can't change the name of the variable.

    I contacted sitemeter, but I haven't heard from them yet.

    Any ideas what could be wrong?

    Thanks

    Why not just try anther counter, may have the same issues though ... but better than being stuck.

    here are some links:
    http://www.thefreesite.com/Webmaster..._and_trackers/

    http://sitetracker.com/

    found these with google, (I am not associated with these sites)

    I wish I had a wife who would convert my HTML to XHTML, so cool

    Then again i'm not married, hehe

    Actually, that's what I did.

    I looked at the old counter's script, and it turns out they use some unclosed <img> tags...

    Our host offers free counters and some stats. We'll go with that for now... It uses Perl instead of Javascript.

    I'll check the ones you mentioned though. Maybe they'll have better stats.

    Thanks
