I want all uid's to be unique

Sure - depending on your brand of directory server there may be something built in ...

For instance Sun has a pre-operation mechanism used to enforce attribute uniqueness across the DIT. By default, it is created as the uid uniqueness plug-in but is not enabled.

You may want to check to see if your vendor provides this type of plug-in ...
