    Lost with basics of ldap.

I must be getting old. I'm having a hard time putting the basic pieces of ldap together in my head. I want to use ldap to authenticate users and pass them on to a user specific page. I also have a Mediawiki set up in a directory inside the httpdocs dir. Right now everthing is on a single domain, but that might change.

I know I have to have an ldap server. I have a centos/apache vps at 1and1 with root access. Would I just install the server somewhere off of the root, or does it need to somewhere else, like on a different machine? I really hate to be so ignorant, but I've looked at several different things on the web and I just can't find a place to get a foothold on this.

If someone can give me just a basic rundown of what goes where, then maybe I can carry on from there.

I would appreciate any reply. Thank you.

Ok, I actually found a web site that is very helpful in explaining LDAP in general. The site is LDAPman.org for anyone interested.

However, I guess my question should be is if an LDAP directory/server is something one can put on the same machine as the web server? Is having both on the same machine common for authenticating web users?

I'm hip to the help thing!

You can run LDAP on the same machine as your web server. I think in this case all your ldap URL's between web server and ldap simply look at localhost:389.

Among other things, ldap is a communications protocol just like http or ftp that runs over a tcp/ip connection.

If you are going to mess with ldap, you need to learn how to use wireshark.
