Adsl usb modem
I have a alcatel speedtouch ADSL usb modem, and I want to install adsl on my Linux box.But the phone company doesnt provide the adsl software for Linux, only for Windows and Mac.
I am using Suse 7.3 (personal edition) and the ADSL thingy in suse doesnt work. Does anyone know how I can get it to work? Thanks in advance. |

sorry i cannot tell you anything specific then
![]() only some general hints: - do you have usb support installed and activated? - did you look in the SuSE hardware database if it is supported? - did you search the SuSE knowledge base? - how does your "modem" appear in windows? is it a network card, really a "modem" (unlikely) or does it have its own device class? |

What do you mean with usb support?Drivers? It does appear in the usb devices list, but I cant use to connect to adsl.
No, i cant find it in the hardware database Nor in the knowledge database. It appears in as an own device class,in configuration panel>system. |

sorry, chances are high it is not supported at all
![]() if you canīt connect to adsl, but it appears in the device list in linux, type "ifconfig eth0" or "ifconfig eth1" if you have a network card additionally. post the output of both here please if it is different from "unkown device" or similar. |

Cool, I will try that now.
Btw, I found some sites about the usb modem: http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/howto.html http://www.xs4all.nl/helpdesk/abonn...nfigureren.html But it's involves some advanced Linux stuff, which i dont understand.Far too hard for me, I am still a beginner. |

ok, it is supported. good.
i donīt have the possibility to test this stuff, youlīll need to try it yourself. follow all instructions thoroughly, if you get stuck, post what you did and what result you got and where and why you canīt proceed. if "ifconfig" gave any results already, you donīt need this ![]() |

Ifconfig returned device not found.
I have to read it first in windows, download all the stuff.Reboot to Linux, and read it again and try it Btw, which of the 2 tutorials should I try first? |

the first one looks fine to me (i also consider it hard to read). sice the manufacturers do some kind of support, this infos should be reliable and up-to-date.
i cannot tell you anything about the second link since i canīt understand this language ![]() |

It's Dutch.
Anyways, I will try the first one then. But it will be really anoying since every time i get stuck, I have to switch back to Windows and post it here. And then switch back to Linux to continue Btw, you are from germany?Suse ist ein Hammer! |

donīt you have and old 28k modem or something alike around? this could save you from re-booting every time.
german, yes. SuSE is the only good german distro i found and it is very powerful. i always download or copy the professional versions since i need the server stuff like apache, php, mysql that are missing from the personal version... |

Yes, I have a 56 k modem. But I dont have account anymore, since I switched to ADSL with my ISP.Iīll see if I can find my old account somewhere at another isp.
Btw, can't you just download apache, php and mysql seperately?Thats how I do it on my windows OS. EDIT:I looked it up, and I dont have a normal internet account anymore.Plus I cant have a normal modem and adsl connected to the phoneline at the same time.THe only thing I can do is register again with an isp, then disconnect adsl modem.Connect the normal modem, install the adsl stuff and then connect the adsl modem and try it. I dunno, for Windows Mysql and apache come with installers.Php can just be extracted to a folder. So you need to change the configuration for each thingy, and also copy some dll files, but thats not so hard.
