I'm not upgrading any machines but have put it on a test machine. It's definitely geared towards end users more now than in the past.

Nope, I don't feel like dowloading a couple of GB again.I will propably upgrade when they release 8.1 (then there will also be less bugs than the 8.0 release).

a worthwhile upgrade
I have been using redhat linux since 7.1 and have to say that 8.0 is one of the smoothest os' out there. BlueCurve is very nice.

I have 7.0 now. I'm going to start downloading the CDs tomorrow at school (T1 line vs. 28.8 KB bumpkin-dial... tough choice). I'm hoping to get 1 of them, 2 if network conditions are good. Slap em on a CD and pop up a whole release... not a bad idea. I've had a lot of trouble with 7.0 because I'm struggling with a lot of hardware that's not well supported outside of Windoze (that'll learn me to buy any more pre-built boxes), so I'm hoping 8.0 will treat me a little better...

You'll need the first three CDs if you want to install 8.0. For some reason it uses a lot of the first two CDs and asks for the third CD but only installs a package or two off of it.

Man... I couldn't even get the first one. I got about 110 MB in 3 hours because the FTP site was so jammed up. I downloaded OpenOffice though!

Yeah I installed RH 8. I have a friend at a university and was able to get it off of their ftp servers.
I have to say it's pretty awesome. They have definitely simplified it and geared it more towards your average advanced user. Installation was a breeze, I had a small problem configuring php and mysql but it was minor. I also downloaded Mandrake 9 and am going to give that a try as well.

it would be much faster to identify the apps that u use that are updated with RH8.0 and get the patchs or updates for them, if there is a new linux kernel then just apply the patches to upgrade it too, why bother wasting time to get the whole thing when u have most of it already?

No, it wouldn't be easier at all. What about resolving dependencies? You try it- upgrade everything on an RH 7.x box, including your compiler to gcc3.2, and then come back and tell us how much time you saved.
There's a reason folks release specific release- it's a snapshot in time of a stable system with all the dependencies resolved. |

dont use the rpms when upgrading, clean out the old stuff and build the new stuff from source

d00d that's so 31337! Instalz frum the sourcez!
That still doesn't resolve dependencies. Try again. On my server boxen, obviously, I install some daemons from source. But come on, I'd like to see you upgrade a RH7.x box to 8.0 manually, or any other distro from a major release to a major release manually. The whole benefit of using a pre-rolled distribution is that you don't have to worry about conflicts/dependencies. Installing from source, while a valid option for items you have very specific needs for, isn't going to help you resolve dependencies easier. Do you really understand what's happening? Good package managers will help you resolve dependencies automatically- manual installation from source DOESN'T. On redhat, check out ximian red-carpet in combination with auto-update. THEY ROCK. |

i never use the prepackaged software managers, i gotten used to doing everything from the console, i also think that its easier to install from sources, but hey, thats just me.......

Erm... I'd have to roll from 7.0 to 8.0 manually using your method. Do you have any clue how long it would take to sort that mess out? It's gonna take me 7 and a half days to finish downloading 8.0, but it's much worth it compared to the inevitable headaches of trying to resolve everything by hand. We're talking a month of work to sloth through all the upgrades I'd have to do by hand.. blech.

well, then again, i have a skeleton system installed..... everytime i find an app i have to install it, not like when i first started when then i found apps that were already on the machine that i had no idea were there ( cause of the thousand that got installed when using the 'standard' install ) so upgrading using the source code is easier for me, i done if before, a notepad and a pencil are needed
