hi degar!
open your pc case, take the NIC out and look for the big chips. post the inscriptions.
and post the output of "cat /proc/pci" (is your NIC pci?)

what did you not understand?
opening your pc case should not be a problem. if you never did before, do it now. it´s about time
what "PCI" says should be no problem either.

"NIC" says "Network Interface Card" - was it this? I actually want to know what the biggest ICs say on their top. eg something like:
"ALPHA 21C210 - SNR 312312123123/123"
or:
"REALTEK 8139a - (C) 1995 blacompany - Made in Taiwan/Hongkong/Malaysia"
(do you remember these names from configuration? yes, linux has drivers for specific chipsets, not for specific cards )

the "cat /proc/pci" needs to be typed in a shell. (aka Console, Text-Terminal, XTerm, ...)

the files and folders below "/proc/" are no real files but contain system information. like a text file with a list of all PCI cards in the system and their configuration (/proc/pci). there you can sometimes read the chipset - and then you have the driver
