What changes does linux allow you to make to the operating system?

I am wondering just how much Linux allows you to change since it is open source...system, application, design, etc., etc. Also, can the SU program and recompile? Thanks!

Did you read the software license that came with your distribution? Most linux is covered by the GPL.

The super user can replace every part of the system. That includes core applications, system libraries and the kernel itself. Since most (in some cases all) components of a typical Linux system are open source, this means that yes, you can recompile them.
