Changing the resolution for console

I've tried to change the vga value in lilo.conf, for example "vga=771" but when I reboot the screen turns blank.

This worked when I had slackware 8.0 but after a reinstall (8.1) it doesn't ..

Any ideas? It's a LCD display (laptop).
