conect Win2000 > Linux

Im very new to Linux and I thought best way to learn is jump in the deep end and see if I can swim..

I want to connect my Win2000 machine to the Linux box which Im running Mandrake 9.0 on.

I have setup Samba via the Mandrake Control panel. No probs but Im sure there is more, I have set the workgroup name on both machines to be the same but they just don't talk. Im not even sure how to see the Windows box from the Linux.

Any tips would be useful.

I have managed to get Apache installed and running but can't see it from the Win2K machine, I guess that all comes down to getting the network happening first..

extremely new but tend to pick up things quickly I think I just jumped right in the deep end with this...

Yes, this would be a good place to start if you want two machines to talk to each other

What have you done so far in terms of network configuration?

So far:::
I have created a Workgroup: Set both to be a member of that Workgroup.

Can't exactly remember how on the Linux box, but it was in the Mandrake Control Centre..

I have set up Samba on the Linux box, Do I need to set up a user account in Samba... Would that be done at the command line..

I have also checked the NIC on the Linux and all is good same for the 2000 machine and I set the IP of the Linux box.

When I try to map a drive to that IP from the 2000 box, it says it can't find it...

Also on the 2000 box in the Network neighbourhood, I can't see any reference to the Linux box...

As I said Im pretty new to this. I managed to have my 2 2000 boxes talking and sharing Internet and all was sweet, but I wanted a challenge. I certainly got it with this....

Run ifconfig on the Linux box, and ipconfig on the Windows box. Post the outputs of both commands here.

Well, I don't know anything about network setup on Linux, but your machines are not on the same subnet, so I'm not supprised they can't talk. The subnet mask, 255.255.255.0 tells you that the 3 first octetts (xxx.xxx.xxx) should be the same. Try changing your Linux box to 192.168.0.2

Edit:
Also, what is the default gateway you have on your win 2k box? Try running all your machines on the same subnet, it will ease your network setup.

You need to do this.

Set it to 192.168.0.1 - or a machine with an internet connection...
