no experience with at&t, but what kind of device do you use for connecting to the cable?

It's a Motorola SurfBoard cable modem that plugs into an 3com 10/100 NIC. I'm not sure about the exact model of the modem, I'm at work right now and can't look. RH Linux 7.3 recognizes the network card. I don't have a clue what settings to use and/or what files I need to make changes to. I'm fairly new to Linux.

which way do you connect to the internet when you use windows? dial-up networking? or did you get a special driver (maybe PPPOE)? |

if you're using pppoe to access, have a look at tk-pppoe (http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/).
I'm using it, it's fast and easy. Hope this helps you ![]() Bye |

Well, if it is a Motorola SB, then you might have to set it up for DHCP (depending on your cable company's settings) or (if your company gave you one) you'll have to set it up to use a static IP address. My cable modem is a SB 4100 setup to use DCHP provided by Comcast Cable. I doubt that the Motorola SB's are PPOE compatible, but isnt PPOE for European countries or something?
Anyhow, that's just my $.02. (Disclaimer) I'm not sure about the correctness of this post. Cheers, Joe of 4Life ![]() |

In windows all I have to do is give my computer the name AT&T gave me and put my workgroup as ATTBI. No drivers or anything are required. I do have a static IP address.

should be an easy task then for linux. try this:
setup the static ip and see if you can ping a internet ip: ping 216.190.27.224 if this succeeded, you have to find 2 nameservers to add to /etc/resolv.conf. after this you can ping www.devshed.com and use the full power of linux ![]() make sure you shut down all services before you connect to the net. there is 1000s of script kiddies waiting for an open ftp or telnet server... |
