Does linux make a good firewall?
I have a Windows PC and use a modem to access the internet. I'm a bit sick of these software firewalls that take up memory and need updating.
Would it be feasible to get a cheap linux box and configure it to make it my firewall? What would I need to get? Does it work with a dial up connection or do I need ADSL? Cheers James |

If you get a distro with the 2.4 kernel then it comes with a great stateful-inspecting firewall called iptables. You can run it on very low-end hardware if all you want it to do is perform NAT services. I'm sure it will function properly on either dial-up or broadband. The best place to start your research would be http://www.netfilter.org/

Monmotha's Firewall Script is pretty good, and fairly simple to configure (well-commented). |
