forgot user passwd

I'm playing around with the Red Hat Linux 7.3. I had perviously set up to login names, "root" and "user". I forgot what the password is for the user login. Is there a way, as root, that I can list number of users and find out what the password is?

Reset the password

You can just reset the password for 'user'. Check out the man pages for the passwd command. This can be done by typing:

man passwd

at the shell prompt. Note this would have to be done as root. DO NOT forget your root password or else big trouble.

When you have physical access to the box - yes, easily. But if it's remotely, you first get the... nah, let's not go in there

Heheh, of course there are. That's why some people take on 'hacking', to get that root. Somehow, I don't think DD knows about Tom's root. Nevertheless, you are correct as usual NoXcuz

I saw this tip on the net but never tried it. Instead of having to go through all the hassle of making a boot disk *before* one can simply type this on "LILO: bzImage root=/dev/hd?? init=/bin/sh ro" so one can bypass the login and get a shell straight away! You fire up your editor and clear the password (or use passwd for that matter).
