Good AVI movie player for Linux?

I have recently downloaded a .avi movie, but when I click on it i Konqueror it opens some app called "xine movie output" and all I get is a black screen with the Xine logo (eventough I have pressed the play button). So I was wondering if someone could point me to a good avi player,or maybe knows what could be wrong.

First of all, the problem might just be opening the file from Konqueror - I sometimes find strange things happening when I try this! Try running Xine (press ALT+F2, type xine, and run it! ), and opening the movie. If that doesn't work, see if you've got MPlayer installed (same procedure with ALT+F2). If not, it might be that you don't have the codec for .AVI files (the codec being instructions for apps on how to decode and play the format).

To get most codecs you'll ever need, go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/dload.html and download the Win32 Codecs (which you then unpack into /usr/lib/win32 as per the instructions with the package).

That should get AVIs, and a lot of other video formats, running smoothly
