Grub Update

i have decided to install solaris(just to get to know how things work in that operating system) in my computer. (virtual box is not an option)

I alredy have windows 7 and ubuntu running side by side

i downloaded the solaris java desktop system and i burned it to a dvd...now i booted from it and turns out it does not have any live cd mechanism...i have a spare partition and if i install it, Something is bound to go wrong with the boot loaders, so my guess is that after i install it, can i go back to ubuntu and run grub update?

i have seen ubuntu upgrade its kernal and I hope it will be the same even if i add another entry to the table?
