Angry I am unable to connect to outer world

I am going Mad. I managed to install RH7.2 without(I did have to ape the book)any glitch. Then the misery started when i tried to install modem. My Sys, PIII, have an internal Ambient Ham Fax Modem. It wasn't detected by RH . So i borrowed an external modem from my Friend and I found that it was dtected when I was configuring my dial up connecetion in GNOMe using RH Dial Up configurator(I have been working on M$ WinBlows98se). I clicked autofind button and it found my external modem. Then after finishing all I clicked debug. I found this thing
-------
WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41
Initializing modem.
Sending: ATZ

your connection is up.

can you ping an ip like "ping 216.190.27.224" (www.devshed.com) but not access it via "ping www.devshed.com"? then your DNS needs to be setup

if both work, congrats. you did the job already.

Or try KDE's kppp (the BEST!) http://docs.kde.org/2.2.2/kdenetwork/kppp/

are you talking to yourself or is this some post from another bbs?

fyi (for-your-information): rtfm=Read The F***ing Manual
you seem to go the right direction

and you should rtfm the manual of this bbs too. there is much better ways to quote than yours!

back to your problem: did you ping? and did you get a pong? (no joke!)

LOL

KDE(kppp) is definetly what you want to use!

you could just connect through kde, drop out go into gnome or just load gnome into kde or enlightenment.

hell from kde you could a kdegnomenlightenment desktop for some fun

i agree, kppp is best suited for your needs.
wvdial seems not to setup the route since you cannot ping.

kppp will do all-in-one and it works quit like the windows-equivalent (NT RAS / 9X "DFÜ Netzwerk" (dont know the english name for the last...)

to your internal modem: maybe it is not supported at all... you need to see yourself in redhat´s compatibility database. many internal modems are not
external ones 99,9% support standard HAYES AT-commands. so any "driver" should do it as long as you choose the right com-port.

It might be the modem, because it could well be a winmodem

I use KInternet, which uses wvdial anyway, and looking at your log you posted there's a bit missing on the end that I have that reads as follows:

----------
Starting pppd at Tue Mar 12 00:31:48 2002 you got this far
pid of ppd: 944
pppd: Using interface ppp0
pppd: local IP address: 213.104.108.230
pppd: remote IP address: 213.204.82.217
pppd: primary DNS address: 194.168.4.100
pppd: secondary DNS address: 194.168.8.100
pppd: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up run successful
Default route Ok.
Nameserver (DNS) Ok.
Connected... Press Ctrl+C to disconnect
We are connected (Date & time)
---------

Does your wvdial log not show that? If not, your modem isn't actually managing to connect properly. It's dialling in Ok, logging in with your provider Ok, but it's not actually setting up your route, with IPs and DNSs. That could either be a fault of your modem, your hardware configuration, or your ISP.
